Labor Day Weekend: Ten Things to Do in Broward and Palm Beach Counties

This past week Hurricane Tropical thunderstorm Isaac gifted most of us with a shortened four-day week of work (thank you, Mother Nature!). And with Labor Day soon upon us (thank you, 19th-century labor unions!), we're in for another long weekend of getting stoned on the couch, stuffing our faces with barbecue, and staring at the TV.

Or maybe you'd like a little more excitement. We thought so. Here's a list of ten things to do around Broward and Palm Beach counties this weekend that don't suck. From a slew of free music shows to burlesque babes and even a spooky movie filming, there's no shortage of happenings outside of your living room in the bicounty area.

Exposure Filming at Black Friday. Friday, August 31, 10 p.m., at the Green Room, 109 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. Ever since Rock of Ages made its way to South Florida to film, it looks like other directors are following suit. Tonight, Green Room's weekly goth party, Black Friday, will become the set for Corey Feldman's upcoming film, Exposure. Don't go overboard and end up looking like an ironic version of The Crow or Lydia Deetz, but do wear your fetishy best. Click here

Labor Day Soiree. Saturday, September 1, 10 p.m., at Pangaea, 5711 Seminole Way, Hollywood. Admission is $20. Instead of sticking around downtown, how about heading out to the enormous Hard Rock Casino complex for a night of dancing and gambling? Spinning the night away at one of the premiere nightclubs is DJ Reach and DZA. Next door at its sister club, Gryphon, world-renowned DJ Boris will be on the 1s and 2s in addition to Donnie Lowe. Admission is $30. Tickets can be purchased here.

Ink and Pistons Tattoo Shop and Art Gallery Grand Opening. Saturday, September 1, 7 p.m., at Ink and Pistons Tattoo Shop, 2716 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach. Admission is free. South Florida is bursting at the seams with creative folks. And, keeping in line with that metaphor, husband-and-wife team Amanda and JR Linton are causing people to call their tailors left and right. Merging the worlds of crafty cuteness and tattooing, the duo's latest venture is a tattoo shop, art gallery, and boutique under one roof in West Palm Beach. Grand opening will include an art show with themes including hot rods, tattoo culture, Day of the Dead, and tiki culture, as well as a custom hot rod show. PS561 and Sugar Mamma Sweets will serve refreshments. Click here.
