Kurt Cobain was a huge fan. Beck named his album Mutations in their honor. David Byrne personally curated a 1999 retrospective album on the band for his Luaka Bop label, but it seemed like nothing could convince legendary Brazilian Tropicalia band Os Mutantes to return to stage.

Then in 2007 two-thirds of the band’s original core, brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias undertook a comeback tour that brought the band to the Manuel Artime Theater. Original singer Rita Lee was too busy with the business of being Rita Lee (plus she happened to be divorced from Baptista, so, you know, awkward), so Brazilian singer Zelia Duncan did an admirable job of filling in. It was one hell of a show, so much so that it snagged “Best Concert” in our 2008 “Best of” issue

Os Mutantes hasn’t slowed down since. They signed to Anti- and their first album of new material in 35 years,

Haih or Amortecedor, is due September 9th. Though, Duncan returned to her solo career and Baptista retired once again. Dias didn’t have to look far for raplcement. He found Bia Mendes and Fabio Recco thanks to a version of “Technicolor” the two contributed to a 2007 Os Mutantes tribute album, and now they’re part of the band.
With new material and members in tow, the latest incarnation of Os Mutantes hits up The Culture Room on October 14. Watch Culture Room’s site for ticket info. After the jump we’ve embedded one of their new songs, “Mutantes Depois” along with a classic.
