More than three years after fusing bossa nova with funk, hip-hop, and acid jazz, Rio de Janeiro's jazz-pop sensation Bossacucanova has developed a niche for itself. The trio, composed of Alexandre Moreira, Marcelinho DaLua, and Márcio Menescal, is inspired by the classic Brazilian sound. In fact, Menescal's father is the legendary Roberto, one of the primary architects of bossa nova, who wrote and played guitar on several classic recordings in the late 1960s and '70s. But by the late '90s, the young musicians were eager to define themselves. They began blending electronic beats into the mix and playing the revamped results to producers and audiences across the country. In 1999, they released their debut, Revisited Classics, then followed it up with Brasilidade, a collaboration with the elder Menescal, in 2001. This weekend, Bossacucanova brings its funky hybrid to Miami alongside guest guitarist Leo Gandoleon and singer Kevyn Lettau.
