Massive Attack is one of the first "trip-hop" acts and so much more than that tag implies. Coming from a diverse background in the working-class city of Bristol, England, Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, and former member Andy "Mushroom" Vowles grew up listening to reggae, dub, ska, punk, soul, funk, and 1980s U.K. hip-hop. Along with Soul II Soul, Smith & Mighty, and Portishead, Massive Attack pioneered combining breaks and rare grooves with smoky bass lines, female vocals, and unique rap stylings, creating its own Bristol sound.

Over the years, the group explored darker tastes on the acclaimed Mezzanine LP and experienced a share of distractions. Its first nonsoundtrack album in seven years, Heligoland, breaks a newer refined sound and welcomes Daddy G back to the studio.
