Metallica Making 3-D Feature Film With the Director of Predators

The stars of 2004's Some Kind of Monster documentary are taking another sojourn into theaters. Except this time it's in 3-D, and instead of being directed by acclaimed documentary filmmakers, it's in the hands of Nimród Antal, who directed 2010's Predators. (If you haven't seen it, it's about monsters, not sex offenders.)

Metallica will start filming the "marriage of narrative and concert" in August, which means there must be unannounced tour dates coming up. It'll be out in summer 2013, according to a press release, but a lot could happen before then.

Drummer Lars Ulrich said he first noticed Antal when the director's Kontroll made a splash at Cannes in 2004 -- the "Hungarian comedy-thriller" about a man who lives underground and plays on the subway tracks before getting caught up in a murder mystery. Antal also directed the 2007 horror movie Vacancy, starring Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsdale, and 2009's Armored, starring Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, and Big Larry Fishburne.

Also, from Some Kind of Monster, here's two members of the biggest metal bands in history getting misty-eyed and talking about "little Danish friends" and digging holes in the ground:
