In the mid-'90s, when Kentucky hip-hop group Nappy Roots first emerged, its unabashed, Southern-fried sound seemed downright weird in comparison to the East Coast boom-bap that ruled rap circles. And if anyone missed the fact that this group was proud of its country roots, there was the fact that its proper debut album in 2002 was titled Watermelon, Chicken, & Gritz. That was a collection of loose, funky, sing-song rapping over guitar-laced, laid-back beats that won the group a decent crossover fandom. Though the early '00s were the peak of the group's Billboard-measured success, the group has continued its grind as an independent act, releasing its fifth album, Nappy Dot Org, on its own NREG label. Opening support for this Lake Worth show comes from local act Rich Kid Soundsystem, another group with a sound rooted, technically, in hip-hop but liberally drawing from equal loves for indie rock and straight-up pop.
