Sneak Peek at Honey's Grand Opening in Delray Beach (Photos)

Here's a riddle for you: What's something that's sweet, sexy, and sophisticated that you can touch, taste, and hear?

That would be Honey, the latest nightlife concept to hit downtown Delray Beach. The newest addition to the Sub-Culture Restaurant Group opens the doors officially tonight, October 30, but we got in last night on the preview. Here's what we experienced.

Honey isn't just another late night hotspot to drink and dance, as evidenced by the Wednesday night soft opening. Instead, you can think of it more as a VIP, supper club sort of place. After all, how many clubs offer small plates by James Beard award-winning chefs? Or craft cocktails designed by the New Times' 2014 "best bartender" recipient?

As for decor: this isn't your average untz-untz venue. There's no dance floor, for one, although there's plenty of space to mix, mingle, and shake your behind.

Step on the outdoor patio out front, and people-watch those cruising down Atlantic Avenue into the main bar. It's a spacious rectangular bar -- the ideal place to drink and socialize. An adjoining room presents a more intimate lounge space with low red leather seating and tables. Move to the back, and you're outside where an exposed patio and bar offers more quiet space to enjoy the evening.

Not many people know this, but here's a fun fact: most Sub-Culture concepts are designed bottom to top by partners Rodney Mayo and Scott Frielich. For Honey, however, they decided to hand the reigns over to Miami's Saladino Design Studio.

The idea behind the decor is Manhattan-style speakeasy meets upstate New York manor, exhibited by the intricate wood-carved panels and "old world" paintings in all shapes and sizes littering the walls. Be sure to take a closer look, however; you'll see each masterpiece has been "tagged" by a rogue artist.

"Think of it as the party house. The parents went away and left the kids alone in their mansion. They went on a bender, and got a little crazy," said Mayo.

All of it is set up with a high-quality sound system that will feature a rotating mix of South Florida's most renowned DJs. Just don't expect to hear hip-hop, Top 40 hits, or dubstep here, resident DJ Misha Samson told us. Instead, he describes Honey's playlist as more refined than what you'll find in other late-night venues.

We wouldn't expect anything less, of course.
