The Deep End

According to the title of his latest album, Steve Porter's dance music is Homegrown, but his funky, progressive house sound is undoubtedly geared toward crowds around the globe. A Boston native who lives in New York City, Porter is a six-year veteran of the DJ circuit who was cutting his own tracks when Balance honcho Chris Fortier discovered him in 1999. He soon signed with management outfit the Collective Agency, home to U.N.K.L.E and James Zabiela.

With more than 50 singles and 30 remixes to his credit, Porter is firmly established in the dance community. His "no rules, no borders," custom-made Porterhouse mixes have wowed Winter Music Conference crowds and Boston's Avalon nightclub. Released earlier this year, Homegrown is a 14-track audiologue of tech-grooves, classical melodies, thumping beats, and cinematic swells. "It was about painting with different colors and growth as an artist," he said recently. "I didn't feel satisfied just producing one-off singles and remixes anymore. I wanted to make a funky, fun, colorful album with a balance of creative freedom and dancefloor tangibility." Porter now brings the delectably vibrant sounds of Homegrown, which is being touted by BPM magazine as "the future of dance music," to Miami. Anybody hungry?

Steve Porter serves a helping of Porterhouse at 10 p.m. Saturday, July 9, in the main room and terrace of Club Space, 34 E. 11th St., Miami. Call 305-373-9378, ext. 223.
