The music world is a wondrous one, where a dreadlocked girl named Alison in a slightly crusty Vero Beach pop-punk band can morph into a beautiful, indie, fashion-plate chanteuse named V.V. Such is the case with the Kills’ “V.V.,” born Alison Mosshart, the former frontwoman of ’90s Florida act Discount. Luckily, she met Brit guitarist and songwriter Jamie Hince, and together, the two have created a group whose appeal has surpassed that of all of their former separate endeavors. The Kills are at once artsy and no-nonsense, melding straight-ahead, minimalist, often-stomping rock with the occasional postpunk frill. Married to a popcentric songwriting sensibility, they make a sultry blend that goes down sweetly with the cool kids but also works well in the bigger-bucks TV sphere.
