The Weekend in Live Music, Labor Day Edition

Tonight, Friday, August 29

*The big deal for scruffy indie lovers tonight is My Morning Jacket at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Some people say they're the best live band ever -- hyperbole? You decide.

*Rock en espanol darling Geordano Henriquez plays at Jazid -- and maybe someday he will finally get around to releasing a proper album.

*How could you not love a punk band called the Crack Whore Sweethearts? And where else would they play besides a converted hulking strip club monstrosity? (That would be the old Crazy Horse, in Miami Gardens, easily visible from I-95.). Click here to read more about it.

*Up in Delray, the ever-hopeful, local Anglophile workhorses Nothing Rhymes with Orange play at Dada. (They're also at the Dubliner in Mizner Park on Saturday, where the hordes will be amassing for Slightly Stoopid.)

Saturday, August 30

*Former hardcore dudes, are you creaming your pants yet? The amazing, amazing H.R. (of the Brad Brains!) plays at Churchill's. It's with his solo band though, so you'll have to chill out a little. Click here to read more about it.

*Obvs, the big event for weirdos in Miami is Club Jupina Colada at PS14, thrown by New Times faves Otto von Schirach, Jose El Rey, and Peasants with Feathers. Click here to read more about Peasants with Feathers, and get all the details.

*Call me crazy, but my suggestion is that the smoke-averse stay away from the Tailgate 2008 tour at Mizner Park Amphitheatre. Featured acts? Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, and SLY AND ROBBIE -- sounds like a fun party for a long weekend. Click here to read more about it.

*Erstwhile Miami resident and Brazilian guitar whiz Rick Udler returns to South Florida for a few days, and Saturday features two events at Glades Guitars in Pembroke Pines. He'll first give a workshop in Brazilian guitar playing technique, and then play a concert immediately afterwards. Click here to read more about the event.

*Tonight's one of several nights you can catch the Bendy Pastorius Group around town. Yep, that's Pastorius like the late South Florida resident Jaco, whose twin sons are in the band. Tonight they're at the American Rock Restaurant Bar and Grill (whew at that name) in Deerfield Beach, and you can click here to get the whole scoop on the band.

*I'm not sure why we should care about Kate Voegele, except that she's all over MySpace and now Facebook too. But she's playing at Culture Room, and you can click here to read more about her.

Sunday, August 31

*Yay, reggae legends Toots and the Maytals return to Culture Room. I always thought Toots should have had the same pop stardom as Bob Marley. Read more about him here.

*Eighties one-hit wonders galore at the Kravis Center in West Palm. The Regeneration Tour features Tommy Tutone, ABC, Missing Persons (okay, they had more than one good song!!!), Naked Eyes, and 10,000 Maniacs (no Natalie Merchant though, sorry). Click here to read more about it.

*Punk Rock Sundays continue at Area 7 in Ft. Lauderdale, featuring faux-Sumo wrestling, fat suits and everything. Really. Click here to get the scoop.
