Top Seven Rising Female-Fronted Bands in Broward and Palm Beach Counties

Broward and Palm Beach counties have their fair share of musical masterminds. And though most acts here are not led by female voices, what we lack in quantity, we make up for in quality. We have some fine bands led by women with powerful messages and vocals.

What follows are seven solid groups fronted by local sisters in song. We wanted to show some respect to these brave and beautiful ladies who make it their business to keep music diverse here and to express their unique visions of the world through sound.

1. Killmama

Deerfield Beach

The other day, we pulled out Fever to Tell, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's debut album. It was so delightfully rock 'n' roll, pumped plump with the blues, it was hard not to be like: Where the hell are the next YYYs? The answer: Right fucking here in Deerfield Beach!

Killmama has that same energy and soul that modern rock so desperately needs. Sophie Sputnik kills it on drums with a voice reminiscent of Heart's Ann Wilson, and Rob Kingsley handling guitar duties makes this twosome sound like the room is filled, wall to wall, ceiling to floor, with only them.

2. Beach Day

Hollywood

If there's one local act that is rising like the sun, it's Beach Day. The Hollywood trio brings it with loud, jingly garage and girl-group romance. It's already been signed to the very hip Kanine Records.

Kimmy Drake, tall with perfectly straight bangs and guitar in hand, heads Beach Day; her presence alone could summon the attention of the world.

3. Darling Sweets

Lake Worth

The Darling Sweets are one of the acts at the helm of the punk-roots movement that's fostering a sound and following in Lake Worth.

Multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Sayre leads the band in song and the crowd in stepping along. There's a lot of movement and love in the Darling Sweets' music. They're also signed to Wayward Parade Records, which will be hosting Aces High Music Festival this April at Respectable Street. You can catch the soulful quartet there.

4. Raggy Monster

West Palm Beach

Raggy Monster is all over the Palm Beach scene. These five filmed their own video with local "zombies" at Speakeasy Lounge in Lake Worth, they've performed Moonfest in WPB, and even were the first to record at Unit 1 Sessions, live in the gallery.

Billy Schmidt and Rachel DuVall both handle vocal duties, but this is definitely a band with strong feminine feelings and plenty of rock 'n' roll. You can relish her signature howl at the start of their album above.

5. Bonnie Riot

Lake Worth

Milly La Madrid, singer and founding member of Bonnie Riot, called the band's newest endeavor: "Something along the lines of 'Indie electrónico raw rock.'" Though the band has endured its share of lineup changes, she and Luis Sanabria have remained steady.

The group's name isn't actually a reference to another fabulous female singer -- Bonnie Raitt -- its meaning is actually "bonnie" as beautiful and riot as riot. A beautiful riot is what La Madrid creates. Tons of soul on top of some real rock energy.

6. The Astrea Corporation

Fort Lauderdale

Carly Astrea is the kind of frontwoman any smart band would want. She looks like a star -- a snappy dresser with a memorable look and sound. She's not all in your face but also not easily forgotten.

These folks are still making trip-hop that doesn't just satisfy the nostalgia of old Tricky fans but evolves the genre. Imagine Carly Astrea as your guide on an extraterrestrial journey into the loving embrace of celestial balanced beats by Mike Astrea.

7. Tim & Adam

Pompano Beach

Tim is actually a lady. No lie. Tim Yehezkely was the voice of the popular Postmarks. She teamed up with Adam Rosenberg from Whirlaway, I Am Stereo, and Hello Human to form a sound that's seriously going to capture all your interest.

It's psychedelic, clean, and indie. Their two voices together demonstrate a harmony of success. Their website notes that their album was mixed by "Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Beck, Air) and mastered by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Sebadoh, Fiery Furnaces)." Pretty solid for a rising act you won't soon forget.
