If Melissa Etheridge has proved anything in her long career, it's that you don't have to write fluff to win a Grammy. The Kansas-born singer/songwriter has two of those awards to her name. And though she won both Grammies more than a decade ago (in 1992 and 1994, both for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance), Etheridge isn't resting on her gold-plated laurels. This is a cancer survivor we're talking about, a woman who came out in public about her sexuality (Yes I Am, as her 1993 album announced) and having smoked dope to get through chemo (Yes I Did was never an album title, though). Etheridge's latest disc, 2004's Lucky, may have its radio-friendly moments, but it's full of the same ultrapersonal lyrics that won her those Grammies.

Melissa Etheridge performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 19, at Mizner Park Amphitheater, 590 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Tickets cost $38 to $103. Call 561-966-3309, or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
