The finals of the Miss Florida Teen USA pageant happens Sunday at Bailey Hall at the Broward College campus in Davie. But the “Miss Cruel Teen USA” event is set for the same location on Saturday, in hopes giving this glamor queens a black eye.
It’s a brainstorm of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) after pageant organizers didn’t respond to an ultimatum, signed by a celebrated champion for animal causes.
Last July, former pageant host and long-time animal rights advocate, Bob Barker, sent a letter to pageant producers at Tel-Air Interests, Inc., requesting removal of the Fur Information Council of America (FICA) from the Miss Florida and Miss Florida Teen sponsor lists. FICA provides funding and fur coat “prizes” to pageant winners.
That’s from the foundation’s just-issued press release. A man who answered the phone at Tel-Air Interests in Hollywood told me that no one was available to comment on the ARFF demonstration.
