Don't Be So Quick to Jump on the Latest "Charlie Crist Is Gay" Rumor

There's been plenty said about the sexual orientation of former Gov. Charlie Crist, but if you've been seeing headlines the past few days similar to the Huffington Post's "Charlie Crist Gay? Former Governor Allegedly Paid Men to Cover Up Affairs," take them with a grain of salt. The allegations aren't coming from police or investigators of any kind -- they're coming from a lawyer in the Jim Greer corruption trial.

The allegations were broken by WTSP, in Tampa: Crist tried to drunkenly kiss Greer at a Beverly Hills hotel, lawyer Damon Chase said in an email, and paid two men to leave the state in order to cover up gay affairs.

The emails were sent in May to the head of Morgan & Morgan, the law firm Crist now works for. John Morgan responded to the email by saying that even if Crist was gay, he wouldn't be going after Greer.

"[Crist] would have to be a sick son of a bitch to try to kiss Porky the Pig," Morgan responded, according to FDLE documents. He also said the accusations were akin to asking loaded questions like "when was the last time you fucked the neighbor's sheep?" and "are you still beating your wife?" to which even an innocent answer sounds guilty. Chase said the allegations were in response to Crist's sworn affidavit stating he wasn't aware of the alleged secret contract Greer was given to raise money for the Florida Republican Party.

"Charlie clearly lied, and now one by one his closest friends are coming out against him because what he did to Greer was just wrong," Chase wrote. "In the event Charlie remains unwilling to clarify his affidavit I'm left with no other choice to discredit him."

Greer, former chair of the party, was charged in 2010 with stealing nearly $200,000 in party funds by steering it toward his private fundraising company without permission; he says the party -- including Crist and his top adviser, current Senate candidate George LeMieux  -- knew about his stake in Victory Strategies.

"It's making sausage," Chase said in 2010. "People just don't like the way sausage is made. It doesn't mean you're a criminal because you make sausage."

But Crist called WTSP Friday night to call the accusations "a bunch of delusional lies," and he's complained to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to characterize the communications as witness tampering.

Greer's trial is set to start in late July, and people have long wondered what kind of dirt was going to come out in the proceedings. It looks like the party's starting early -- but when it comes to believing accusations of covering up gay affairs, keep in mind who wants you to believe them.
