The Broward Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who drowned Tuesday night in choppy waters off Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. George Yuantei Tsai, 36, is the man’s name.

Deputies and volunteer firefighters were called to the beach near the 4100 block of El Mar Drive Tuesday night around 6:30 after two friends of Tsai’s reported seeing Tsai’s kayak tossed by a wave. One friend, Andrew Beachler, pulled Tsai from the water while a vacationing doctor started CPR. But it was too late to save Tsai, who was not wearing a flotation device.
