Harbor Seal Rescued in Lake Worth Inlet, Officials Try To Figure Out How it Ended Up in Florida

A harbor seal who obviously made a wrong turn somewhere, ended up in our neck of the woods over the weekend.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife were called on Sunday about reports of a seal swimming around near the Lake Worth Inlet. Swimmers spotted the seal swimming about, and reported that it seemed to look sluggish.

The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office was called in to assist the FWC to help rescue the seal.

The Lake Worth seal eventually swam up to some rocks and rested there for a few hours. FWC officials say the animal appeared lethargic and thin. Officials were able to get to the seal, and transported it to SeaWorld to be examined.

According to the report, the seal was injured, though officials don't know how.

A seal in Florida is a pretty rare thing to see (unless you plunk down $80 bucks to see the seals at Seaquarium waddle around and act like pirates and clowns, which is probably not how they act in their natural habitats)

So people who were in the area were naturally psyched to see one.

From wptv.com:

Meanwhile, visitors at the beach took advantage of the very rare photo opportunity. Josh Saxon said, "It was pretty cool, but pretty odd that there was a seal here in Florida because we don't get that. I've seen a lot of wild life being a native, and it was pretty cool."

Lisa Castronova agreed, "Very cool, very cool. It just seemed kind of docile, just kind of harmless and just tired."

Meanwhile, officials are still trying to figure out where the seal came from, and how it ended up in Florida.

One theory as to how the seal ended up down here: it probably tried to escape the harsh winter weather in other parts of the world.

How damn cold is it outside of Florida that even a seal is all, "Yea this is too damn cold, man!"
