Jets Player May Be Guardian of Child Whose Father Perished in Miramar Crash

I know we're supposed to hate all things connected with the New York Jets, but it'll be hard not to pull for Kareem Brown. He's a native South Floridian who suited up for the U. and then -- through no fault of his own -- was drafted by the odious New England Patriots in 2007 before being cut and landing with the despicable Jets that same year.

A few weeks ago, during an early morning drive back from Broward County, Brown watched his best friend, Jeffrey Nelson, veer off University Drive in Miramar, roll over a median, and collide with a tree. Nelson was killed.

Brown broke the news to Nelson's mother and girlfriend, who is pregnant.

Now Newsday is reporting that Brown is likely to sign on as the guardian of that unborn child. Which means that Brown's hopes of making the team after dropping over 60 pounds and converting from defensive line to tight end, take on a new sense of urgency.
