Traffic Alert: Turnpike South Closed After Fatal Accident

Police have closed the turnpike's southbound lanes at Okeechobee Boulevard, as well as the entrances to the southbound turnpike at Okeechobee Boulevard, PGA Boulevard and the Beeline Highway, after a fatal crash there this morning.

According to officials, a woman's car was struck from behind when she tried to avoid an accident that had happened in front of her. The woman was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center but died of her injuries.

Reports say the accidents happened at 5 a.m. this morning.

The driver of a pickup slammed into the center median wall on the southbound lane of the turnpike. The truck spun to a stop just past Okeechobee Blvd.

The woman, driving a Mazda behind the truck, either crashed into the pickup, or stopped before it. That's when another pickup came from behind the Mazda and crashed into it.

It is not known why the driver of the first pickup crashed into the center median. The driver was taken to Wellington Regional with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the second pickup suffered only minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
