In the '90s, a new breed of frontman was born. Clawed from the guts of the defunct spandex-wearing, teased-haired, makeup-wearing cock-rockers. These newcomers had no qualms about stealing bread from the mouths of their decadent predecessors as they rose to prominence in those odd times. Perhaps the best known of this bunch was Eddie Vedder. The other was Chris Cornell.
With the end of his landmark grunge band Soundgarden, he went on to do numerous musical projects, namely Audioslave with Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. In his latest venture, Cornell treats the Fillmore Miami to an intimate, accoustic performance.
While this may seem refreshing, some have speculated as to how it may be received. As we all know, experimentation by established musicians may not always strike gold, as seen is this video from a previous performance from Cornell:
Okay, so that was not an actual performance. Cornell, like many of his grunge kin, has been the victim of the infamous "Shreds" series on YouTube. He's actually been busy lately, finishing a song for Marc Foster's latest film Machine Gun Preacher. Entitled "The Keeper,"
the song serves as the lead track for the film's soundtrack.
Listen here:
Perhaps Cornell has taken inspiration from compatriot Eddie Vedder, who notably did the soundtrack to the 2007 film Into The Wild.
Another target of "shreds," Vedder has also been active. Earlier this year he released Ukulele Songs. As the record's title implies, it is a collection of songs done with the accompaniment of the charming, bite-sized Hawaiian instrument.
If all goes well, maybe we could be treated to a Temple of the Dog Reunion, done as a duet through use of accoustic guitar and ukulele.
Regardless, the show steps outside of what a performance from Cornell is normally expected to consist of, which in itself is worth checking out.
