The upcoming three weeks in South Florida are pretty much heaven on
earth for "phans" and other chilled-out festival-loving types. Phish's
four-night stand at the American Airlines Arena begins on the 28th,
and, of course, kicks off on New Year's Eve, with a bunch of other
livetronica-type afterparties going on at nearby downtown venues.
Then
comes Sound Tribe Sector 9 at Revolution on Jan. 2. Then there's the Jam Cruise from Jan. 3 - 8. Then the festivities wrap
up on land on the 8th with shows by Karl Denson's Tiny Universe at
Culture Room, Zappa Plays Zappa at Revolution, Holy Kimoto (EOTO plus
Steve Kimock) at White Room, and then Galactic with JJ Grey and Mofro
at Revolution on the 9th. That should leave enough residual good vibes
to last us through the rest of the month -- until the late
January/early February shows by Gov't Mule, the Yonder Mountain String
Band, and Keller Williams. WTF is in the water?
But, a few locals are rolling out the welcome mat at Churchill's this
Sunday for a multi-band bill called, um, "Landarado." No relation to
Langerado; this is the creation of a fellow named Tony Landa. (He
probably should have gone with another punny name, as Langerado itself
doesn't have the best "brand image" right now, but whatever. Also not sure that the Langerado-style logo is really parody enough to be kosher, what do you think?)
The show is billed as a "Hialeah-style pre-party," but that's mostly because of the headliners, Humbert. The show organized a similar welcoming jam the last time Phish played New Year's Eve in Miami, back in 2003. This marks the first Humbert show since frontman Ferny Coipel's serious scooter accident last May.
The rest of the line-up is diverse, to say the least. The Nag Champayons are part of that whole extended hippie-delic Moksha Family thing, and play what is described as "tropadelic-afrogalactic sounds."
Electric Piquete, led by Michael Mut, play a straight-up Latin descarga kind of thing; Miami New Times voted the group best Latin band earlier this year.
King Bee are an excellent, kind of overlooked local act who play Black Crowes-style blues-rock. Dreaming in Stereo play a kind of baroque, feel-good champer pop. Curious Hair are experimental staples at the occasional Night of Weirds events. And, so as not to leave anyone else out in this blog post, the bill is rounded out by Rey "Conga" Diaz and his Birthday Booty Jam (?), Rezidue, Ruben Sindo Acosta, and Goodbye Pluto.
