There was a time when putting on an Indigo Girls T-shirt was making a political statement, and Lyle Lovett was married to the most famous movie star on the planet. Those times might have come and gone, but their country and folk influenced tunes have served as touchstones for the now thriving genre we call Americana.
Because of this cultural relevance, the Indigo Girls and the former Mr. Julia Roberts, serve as worthy headliners for the inaugural Lauderdale Live music festival held December 6 to 8 at Huizinga Plaza.
Also appearing at the festival on stages across two waterfront parks, along with three yachts,will be 1980s supergroup Huey Lewis and the News, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Shovels & Rope, Jason Isbell, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors, the Wild Feathers, Holly Williams, and more to be announced shortly.
Anyone wondering how Huey Lewis, singer of "I Need A New Drug" fits into this festival only has to do a cursory IMDB search to remember Huey Lewis was Lyle Lovett's costar in the Robert Altman classic movie Short Cuts. Keep your fingers crossed that Lovett spouts out dialogue from the movie where he played a sensitive, foul mouthed, crank-calling birthday cake baker.
