It's no secret that we love MAYDAY!, the area act making live hip-hop that somehow manages to be intelligent, funky, danceable, and mass appeal-worthy all at once. It's also no secret that we're big fans of hard work over hype, and it's the former from which the local group is benefiting after years on the grind.

Their debut album for Strange Music -- an independent that has proven to do a better job of marketing its own music than the majors -- has officially cracked the Billboard Charts. On the next round of charts the disc, titled Take Me To Your Leader, comes in at number 15 on Rap Albums, number 18 on Independent Albums, and number 86 on the Billboard Top 200.

Yesterday, the group also released a new music video for "Lando's Jam," shot by area director Rommel Garcia. The clip for the mellow tune finds bearded Plex Luthor running through scenic South Beach, into Wynwood, and back, stopping to smack the cigar out of the mouth of a Fidel Castro lookalike along the way (1:40). That's a long-ass run. Training for world domination, Plex?

We also spotted this billboard for the album (a refreshingly old-school tactic!) deep in South Miami-Dade County over the weekend. MAYDAY! is everywhere.
