The monthly jam at the Jib Room (2104 E. Oakland Park Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale) has come a long way from its humble beginnings about a year ago, when it was a weekly Sunday open mike called Cut of Your Jib. Back then it was a gathering among a few friends -- read New Times review here -- that dissipated when host Travis Newbill decided to follow Phish around for the summer of 2009.
A few months after he returned, Newbill revived the gathering as a monthly event. Jib Jam, as it came to be called, isn't so much an open mike anymore as it is, say, flexible with its line-up -- New Times music editor Reed Fischer and the very non-musically inclined calendar editor Mickie Centrone have been known to pick up a kazoo from time to time.
In addition to the house band, Travalonia, made up of Evan Rowe, aka Catalonia, and Newbill, that plays every event, this week will feature a final set by singer-songwriter Mike Mineo before he sets off on tour. Brady Newbill, Travis' brother, will also play. The show starts at 8 p.m. and admission is free.
