In our Moving Units column, Mike Ramirez at Fort Lauderdale's Radio-Active Records
graciously keeps us up-to-date and comments on the current releases
flying out of his store each week.
The members of !!! (sometimes pronounced chk chk chk) had to be kind of pissed about two years ago when a whole bunch of bands too crummy to mention here started jacking their left-of-center updates on funk and dance music -- and actually gaining traction. Ultimately, good musicianship wins out, and "AM/FM" from Strange Weather, Isn't It? comes at the perfect time to provide another feel-good hit for the fall. And if that reference falls dead, it's definitely time to bone up on this band.
Radio-Active Records' Top 5 Sellers for August 31 - September 6
1. Black Crowes - Croweology (Silver Arrow)
2. !!! - Strange Weather, Isn't It? (Warp)
3. Street Dogs - Street Dogs (Hellcat)
4. Jenny and Johnny - I'm Having Fun Now (Warner Bros.)
5. Land of Talk - Cloak and Cipher (Saddle Creek)

Lots of buzz coming around the corner for Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkle (4AD), the Drums' self-titled album (Downtown), Robert Plant's Band of Joy (Rounder), the Walkmen's Lisbon (Fat Possum), Swans' My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (Young God), and others.
