Both crazed and casual fans alike couldn't wait for the second season of Orange Is the New Black which premiered online early last month. The Emmy-nominated Netflix original series has a large following of dedicated obsessives, and although you could have watched the whole season at one fell swoop, those of us with enough self-control to pace themselves watch on Wednesdays.
The show, centered on the character of Piper Chapman, tells the story of a rather eclectic mix of women serving time in prison. The second season has provided a lot of backstory on how these gals landed their asses in the slammer and into the beginnings of Piper and Alex's heated and oh, so very complicated relationship. And while we got a lot less of Laura Prepon, formerly Hot Donna, it's been another amazing season.
Ever since we saw Piper and Alex shake it to "Milkshake" and sang along with the ladies during the prison blackout to Lisa Loeb's "Stay," we've been wondering what other tunes the lovely ladies of Litchfield enjoy. Here's a detailed OITNB character playlist, a breakdown of what we imagine these women love to listen to while doing their time.
Piper Chapman
The Hippie
Piper might have had some dangerous moments with Alex which landed her in Litchfield, but more recently, she launched a line of soap products and did a master cleanse with her fiancé Larry. We're thinking a WASP-y wannabe hippie like Piper (who we totally love now that she's in prison) would have been down for a little Jason Mraz and John Mayer, she probably lost her v-card to Dave Mathew's "Crash Into Me" in her college years.
Alex Vause
Rocker Rebel
Alex on the other hand is definitely the anti-yuppie, more of a natural rebel with her love of black eyeliner, red lipstick, black thick-rimmed glasses, and wicked tatttoos. She even sported some neon blue streaks in her hair outside of prison. If she had an anthem, it would probably be Green Day's "She's a Rebel." We can definitely picture Voss as a rock lover, applying said eyeliner while listening to some Green Day, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and the Ramones.
Brook SoSo
Social Activist
One of season's two new additions, Brook SoSo has already shown off some of her musical tastes. She's definitely into a lot of '90s era chick music, as shown by her outbursts of songs from Lisa Loeb and Meredith Brooks. Got to say, I feel like there was a bit of a missed opportunity here. Would have laughed my ass off if the song she'd sung had been Fiona Apple's "Criminal." Oh well, there's always next season.
She also staged a hunger strike in protest of the prison's awful living conditions. So we know this hippie chick wishes she'd attended Lilith Fair back in the day and swooned at her music idols like Sarah McLaughlin, Fiona Apple, and Natalie Merchant live.
Lorna Morello
Stuck in the '80s
Morello grew up in Jersey in an old school Italian household. She has that stereotypical Sopranos-y accent going on and loves her red lipstick and roller-curled black hair. Even though she got herself thrown in prison, she appears to be sweet as a lamb. A bit of a melodramatic diva, but a true friend. We can totally picture Morello having had some posters of her diva role models up in her old room like Cher and Madonna. Maybe next season, we'll get a different kind of sing-a-long, this time with Morello leading the ladies into a painfully fitting chorus of "If I Could Turn Back Time."
Cindy Hayes
Hip-Hop Soul
This season we got a glimpse of Cindy's sonic predilections during a flashback scene where she was rapping with her little sister in the car to 50 Cent. While she landed herself in prison due to some less than gangster reasons -- revealed in episode "Comic Sans" -- we can guess now that Cindy's into some pre-Fiddy hip-hop legends like Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Hell, she probably even loves Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise." Then again, who doesn't? Maybe a few soulless 20-year-old hipsters. It was so good, Falling In Reverse did a cover of it.
