Fans of '90s alternative, rap-rock, hackey-sack bands, garage rock, smooth Latin rock, and classic rock, rejoice! The inaugural Orlando Calling festival is going down November 12 and 13 at the Citrus Bowl. If you're wondering if you should save up some money, grab your friends and a cooler of snacks, and make the not-so-extensive drive to Central Florida, we are going to help you make the decision for yourselves. The day(s) you attend will depend highly on your age demographic.
First of all, the Pixies highlight the lineup on Saturday, November. That should be reason enough to spend 1/9th of your day on the Ronald Reagan Turnpike. If you missed their glorious 2004 performance at Mizner Park in Boca Raton, here's your chance. Watching the four of them play a set list loaded of (should've been) hit singles is totally worth the drive.
The rest of Saturday includes Jack White's main band, the Raconteurs, who are gonna rip and rock the fest too. The Raconteurs answer the question: What would the White Stripes sound like with a bass guitar and a rock drummer? The answer is: They would sound very good, but it would be a little less fun. Also, totally worth the drive.
Iron & Wine, the Roots, and Dr. Dog add musical strength and credibility to the fest. While the Killers were one of the most promising bands of the new millennium, we don't know how well they'll fare live, especially in a huge setting. You know, if they play nothing but jams off the first two albums and don't wear too many owl feathers and eagles wings, it'll be probably a fun watch. O.A.R. will be there, so in case you can't find a ride or don't feel like driving -- you can ask your cool uncle to take you in his Dodge Caravan.
