Local pop-minded six-piece City of God plays the Road on New Year's Eve.

​The Vagabond and White Room aren't the only downtown Miami venues opening their doors to the Phish crowds who will invade starting any minute now. A little further south, Tobacco Road starts its own spate of after parties tonight, December 28. And while the 14th Street clubs are taking their own events in the kind of hip "livetronica" direction, the Road is going with a good old-fashioned guitar-based jam band: South Florida favorites the Heavy Pets. 

The Fort Lauderdale quintet plays in the venue's upstairs "cabaret" tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday night for $10 a show. (Surprisingly, there are no multiple-night ticket deals). That cabaret is pretty small, the building is old, and the Heavy Pets are pretty popular on the jam circuit, so hopefully the place doesn't collapse.

Meanwhile, the club's New Year's Eve party -- its 97th! -- is slightly pricier but similarly homespun. Tickets are $35 now, or $50 the day of the show. Serious drinkers, this is your deal, because that door charge includes a premium open bar for the entire night, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The taxi ride home is extra. Music comes from DJ Oski (naturally), and live sets by local reggae/rock/funk act Hyllus, and similarly local six-piece City of God, which the club bills as the "next Black Eyed Peas." Um, not sure about that -- City of God is actually LESS annoying -- but again: eight-hour open bar for $35 (or $50).
