Pitbull Is Coming to Miami — Or Actually to Sunrise, Which Is a Great Part of Miami

In a story titled "Pitbull Leaves Miami Out of His Upcoming Tour" yesterday in Miami New Times, New Times-Broward Palm Beach's sister publication, ignorant freelance writer Dyllan Furness got it completely and absolutely wrong. 

Furness pointed out that Mr. 305 is avoiding the 305 in his Bad Man Tour this summer by choosing to perform in Sunrise. That is technically true. The BB&T center, which Pit sensibly picked for his local stop, is in the 954 — or the 754 — which is just north of the 786 or the... whatever...

Bottom line: It takes half an hour to drive to the BB&T Center from my house in the, um,  305. Parking is easy there. Last weekend, I was there for the Wings for Life run. It was a stupendous event — chock full of 305ers — to benefit those with spinal injuries. No one — not one person — complained it wasn't Miami. The reason, Dyllanito, is that Sunrise is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area, according the US government.

I ain't saying this because both newspapers' management plans a new event called EAT at the BB&T. Nor am I saying it because I am a Panthers fan. I'm making this point because South Florida has become one big megalopolis since I moved here in 1989, and Pitbull has every damn right to play where he wants in it. And hey, I have credibility to make this point. I am editor of both newspapers and have lived in both counties. 

Also, Dyllan, you ignorant slut, Pitbull is a genius. Stop hating on him. Some of his success is merchandising, sure. But he is a real product of Miami who was helped along the way by the original Mr. 305, Luther Campbell. 

Dyllan, you, I think, grew up in the 954. So maybe there is some self loathing, here. Just maybe.
