Who would have guessed that in 2013, we'd still be writing about the guy who serenaded "I Believe I Can Fly" to Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan in the movie Space Jam?
But R. Kelly's career trajectory changed with his creation of the epic 33-chapter R&B opera "Trapped in The Closet." Whether it was intentional or not, the totally weird series is comedy in its highest form. The humor is multiplied when you enjoy it with Kell's commentary, which, in essence, is like being in a private screening room with you watching R. Kelly watching himself while smoking a cigar and admiring the genius of his own lyricism. Since that viewing experience, many have decided every act by R. Kelly deserves to be analyzed with a fine comb.
His latest work, a remix of the popular radio song "U.O.E.N.O.," is no different.
Rocko's original rendition of "U.O.E.N.O." was best known for what was deleted from the track, a verse by Rick Ross that many took as a glamorization of date rape. Rocko cut Ross's contribution, so the song could get radio play which helped it get to number 20 on Billboard's charts. Now things have come full circle, as R. Kelly, a man who was allegedly caught on videotape urinating on a minor, got his hands on the song and his contribution is just as bizarre as you would hope.
His voice greets us in auto-tune "It's the remix. You know I got to do it." Someone else chimes in, "Someone's got to do it." Seemingly unaware that Usher, A$AP Rocky, and countless others have beaten him to the remix punch, but as always, after R. Kelly all other remixes have been stricken from the record.
See, he's got his middle fingers up, and he's in this bitch turned up for what, and there's shit talking to a toilet, and you don't even know it.
He's a six-year-old with a great voice who learned a bunch of curse words. But R. Kelly, like most six-year-olds is hilarious. And again, you're left wondering is this a brilliant meta commentary on the inanities of modern lyrics, or is R. Kelly part of the problem?
In other words, are we laughing with him or at him? Is he making fun of "U.O.E.N.O." and we don't even know it?
