Cake dominated the airwaves in the early part of this decade, churning
out hits that became instant classics. The band's funky, clean sound
(self-described as "dinky") provided the perfect backdrop to frontman
John McCrea's cool-guy speak-sing delivery of endlessly clever, often
perplexing lyrics, and then there's that iconic trumpet. Showroom of Compassion, the first album of new material in six years, comes out Tuesday on the band's own
imprint, Upbeat Records. The album was recorded at their studio outside
of Sacramento, using 100 percent solar power from the panels the guys installed on
the roof a few years ago.

In addition to creating Sacramento's first off-the-grid recording studio, Cake has been giving away trees at their shows for the past few years. An audience member is picked at random, and asked a nature-related trivia question. If they get it right, they go home with an indigenous sapling!
No word yet on if Cake has plans to offset the carbon footprint of their upcoming tour, but they'll hit South Florida on Friday, January 14, at the Sunset Cove Amphitheater in Boca Raton. You can ask them there, and you might just go home with a tree!
