The Mission Veo
Recession-minded, "frugal," or just plain cheap? No problem -- Ten Under $10, a new column on Crossfade, gives you budget-friendly music events to check out over the weekend.

Tonight, Friday, May 29

*The Mission Veo is one of the best local dark, post-punk-type acts going, and tonight they play at one of the most fun, no-bullshit weekly dance parties: Fridays at the Vagabond. If you show up before midnight, admission is free; otherwise it's $5. There are also drink specials for the earlybirds. Click here to get full details and a free Mission Veo MP3.

*On the swankier side of hipster nightlife, there's always Misfit Fridays at Louis, in the Gansevoort South on Miami Beach, which features the latest in electro-house and other blog-friendly sounds. Admission is free, technically, but the door here is notorious, so get your game right if this is your thing. Click here for full details.

*You can party for free in Fort Lauderdale beach, too (and doubtless with 500% less of the typical Miami 'tude). The weekly High Profile Fridays party at Al Patra Lounge in Beach Place is free, and there are free drink specials to boot. Click here for full details.

Saturday, May 30

*Transit Lounge in Miami hosts the En Tu Ciudad Tour, featuring the cross-cultural sounds of Suenalo, Minimal, and Radioboxer, with a DJ set by Eddie of Bachaco. Admission is free, but you'll have to RSVP first at myspace.com/entuciudad. Click here for more details about the show.

*Keep it d.i.y. and check out Goo on Saturday, where the Baltimore thrash-punk trio Surf Nazis on Ecstasy headline a bill that'll only cost you $5. Local acts Eztorbo and Hellmass open, as do the Panix and Mehkago NT, who never, ever disappoint. Click here for full details and a free Surf Nazis MP3.

*Jazz/fusion lovers will want to check out the Bendy Pastorius Group at Tobacco Road. Yes, the group includes two sons of the late, great Jaco. Admission is $5, which leaves you some cash to try Tobacco Road's tasty bar snacks. Click here for full details.

*In Fort Lauderdale, local act Phineas J. Whoopie celebrates the release of its latest full-length, Down the Rails, at Pulp Live. Admission is $5. Click here for full details and a free P.J. Whoopie MP3.

*Two of Miami's best female-fronted acts, Afrobeta and Steph Taylor and the State Of, play a rare, cozy gig in-store at Sweat Records. Admission is $5. Click here for full details.

*Soulflower

is probably the most visible female MC in local underground hip-hop

circles, and she's dedicated to bringing females back to the culture.

She's also dedicated to good times, good rhymes and heavy rhythms in

general, and as such she's hosting her reggae-heavy Electric Mothership Cruise

this Saturday to celebrate the release of her new album. The acoustic

performance and listening party from 9 to midnight is just $10 at the Tikki Beach Boat in Miami beach. Click here for full details.

Sunday, May 31

*The School of Rock

wasn't just a clever Jack Black premise; it's actually now a national

franchise of rock music schools in 60 U.S. cities. The coolest thing

for its attendees is that the school books frequent shows for its

student bands. The latest is this Sunday at the Gibson Guitar showroom in Miami, for $7.

If you're a guitar geek, beyond the music, that low admission price is

worth it for a chance to gawk at the rare Les Pauls and SGs on display.
