Yes, it's sad but true: At least one local institution is meeting its own apocalypse in 2012. As of the new year, the Monterey Club is no more. Blame a lack of hard liquor, the economy in general, or any number of other factors. But in its two-year existence, the cozy Fort Lauderdale spot gave dozens of local bands a spot on a proper stage to play original music. Many left-field touring acts along the roots/rockabilly/and alt-country spectrum also performed rare shows in the area thanks to the club.
To send it off, friends and family are throwing one last shebang this New Year's Eve. While bands are still being added to the bill, among those confirmed are many that represented the venue's cow-punk aesthetic: the Darling Sweets, Los Bastardos Magnificos, the Wholetones, and Everymen. This might not be the last hurrah, though. Monterey Club owner Rob Stannard promises a new business in a new location nearby but is so far mum on the details.
