Jangly teenage indie pop quintet the Vogans are about to prove they are more than just another hobbyist band playing in their parents garage. This weekend, these talented dudes are gearing up for the release of their debut self-titled EP with accompanying party at Delray Beach café-cum-music-locale the Beat Cup. Due to some post-production issues, the album was delayed for nearly a year, but that hasn't dampened the spirits of these fresh-faced maestros.
The band gave us a sneak peak of the record, and we can tell you, there is not one single dud found amidst this album's six shimmering, tightly-crafted songs.
Replete with hopscotching riffs, driving rhythms, and instant hooks, this five-piece has struck upon the magic formula of upbeat tempos and bright-eyed cheer that, we are willing to bet, will land them on many a music blog page in the coming months.
On first listen, Andre Heizer's confident sneers, Nick Jamshidi's jittery strums, and John Paul Morrissee's pitter-patter drum beats brings to mind the instant likability of Toronto's Tokyo Police Club. This group of young Canucks enamored us with their debut EP, Lessons in Crime, an album that did not leave our record player for weeks on end.
"Image" is one of our favorites of the Vogans' efforts, with its jerky guitar riffs and the manic danceable energy of Minnesota's Tapes 'n Tapes. The band showcases versatility; "Dr Wallace" has the charge of the Cribs and the album's open "Black Lotus," is an expansive number with flairs of bell interludes. It has many parallels to the Stone Roses early work.
The Vogans will take the stage with the garage rock fuzz of Killmama, and present a whole new body of work, you'll lap up like a puppy in a toilet bowl.
