​I try not to be too biased when it comes to Latin music. But it's hard to stay impartial when you're Cuban. After all, we're talking about one tiny island responsible for so many ass-shaking styles of music, it's downright mind-boggling. Never mind the fact that every single exile you've ever met was a doctor there before they left. So much music--son, which we all know as the very basis for salsa, cha cha cha, mambo, rumba and guaracha are all incredibly relevant in the realm of tropical music. And of course, there's timba, a salsa hybrid pioneered mainly by Los Van Van, drawing on jazz, rock, funk and even hip hop over a foundation of charanga.

Bringing you timba live tonight, Timba Swing, of course. The Homestead-based group will perform the classics, as well as timbafied covers of non-traditional jams, at La Casa Tula in Coral Gables. Here's hoping Tula's more careful with the house than she was with her bedroom, which of course, caught fire when she fell asleep without putting out the candle. Or so the song says.
