Unit 1 Hosts Art by Juan Doncel and Record Release Party for the Sunny DeVilles

It's looking like another rambunctious Saturday night on the wrong side of the tracks in Lake Worth, as L.A. transplant Jacques de Beaufort's Unit 1 gallery/performance space again brings new art and new music to the seaside city's Little Mexico district.

"Women, Money, Fiction" will be Colombian artist Juan Doncel's first solo show -- look for the boldly colored canvasses. Music kicks in around 10, a record release party for the Sunny Devilles, with performances by themselves, Astrea Corporation, and Skagboy.

Working with custom stencils and layers of acrylic, Doncel's work echoes the street and graffiti art of Banksy and others. De Beaufort, an associate professor at Palm Beach State College's Eissey Campus, with whom Doncel studied, describes his former pupil's work as "an aspirational dream" of "seductive color and swaggering bravado."

"I don't know much about him personally," De Beaufort told New Times. "He is, and was a mysterious fellow -- like one of those Buddhist monks that Alan Watts wrote about -- silently wandering the forest of solitude, manning the lookout tower... I do know he is a great guy, coming to America about 10 years ago from Colombia, and now at the age of 23, he works restaurant jobs."

"Some students wander forth from beneath the protective shade of pedagogy and stumble recklessly into the real world with guns loaded," de Beaufort said. "Most die instant metaphorical deaths and wise up headed for fates unknown. A few struggle on resolutely, maybe even rising to their feet to make some art. A few of those few end up being Artists. Juan is one of them."

The Sunny Devilles have been regular fixtures at Unit 1, performing at openings and shooting videos with de Beaufort. The new album, In Search Of... showcases their latest joints, South Florida space-age hip hop.

Sharing the stage are Astrea Corporation, pushing the edge with their experimental techno sound, and newcomer Skagboy, a soloist de Beaufort calls "very out there techno hip-hop."

Juan Doncel: "Women, Money, Fiction" from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, February 14, with musical performances from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., at Unit 1, 1202 Lucerne Ave., Lake Worth.
