Shopping for instruments at Guitar Center back in the mid-'90s was often an ear-splitting experience. Aside from the endless number of goofballs -- my friends included -- who would just sit and play the riff from Smashing Pumpkins' "Today" ad nauseum, the staffers were generally a unique blend of snob and dork that made it seem like earning a commission wasn't worth it if a hallowed electric guitar fell into the wrong hands.

Enter the Pains of Being Pure at Heart's "Heart in Your Heartbreak," an energetic ball of bright post-punk from an album you know we love that would likely calm everyone down -- even those in the (gulp) cymbals section. In the accompanying clip, the band dresses up like a bunch of Guitar Galaxy misfits -- love the grey hair, bassist Alex Naidus -- and gets another record store clerk especially riled.
