Tonight's Phoenix show at Fillmore Miami might not have the same OMG/WTF/LOL quotient of the recent Madison Square Garden extravaganza. But it still might. In any case, we know that Wavves will open for the French rockers, and that has a level of intrigue worth showing up early for.
Most important, Wavves' King of the Beach is one of the most kinetic, infectious, and bratty albums of the year. Pissing off your parents got pretty difficult now that they're your Facebook friends, but try playing this album in any proximity to them and it's likely to get a "Who's that smart aleck? Put the Decemberists back on now!"
That smart aleck, by the way, is Nathan Williams, a San Diego punk who is pretty dismissive in interviews, even when the interviewer is Blink-182's Mark Hoppus.
Case in point, from a recent Billboard interview:
What are your ultimate ambitions as a band?Unfortunately, the gig isn't at BankAtlantic Center, so we can't see about the hockey part of it.
To tour with Blink-182. Headlining. You would open for me. My second
ultimate ambition is to open for you. My third ultimate ambition is to
play on a professional NHL hockey team. I've never played hockey before,
but I'd like to try it out.
I'm out of questions. Is there anything else you want to say?
I love you.
Phoenix, with Wavves. 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 27, at the Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Sold out. Click here.
