A pair of would-be burglars tried to break into a home in the quiet Fort Lauderdale neighborhood of Rio Vista this afternoon and were thwarted by a 15-year-old.
The boy was inside when the burglars tried to get in. He called his mom, who called police. Fort Lauderdale cops surrounded the house in the 1000 block of SE Seventh Street. The burglars then tried to hide by ducking into the crawl space underneath the home.
The police blocked off the streets around the home and
waited, hoping the would-be burglars would come out on their own. When they
didn't, the cops called SWAT and canine units. About 2 1/2 hours after
the standoff began, a Fort Lauderdale police German shepherd chased the two out from under the
house.
Cops hauled
the two would-be robbers onto the sidewalk about 5 o'clock, when
neighbors waiting to get home at the end of the day snapped photos with
their phones. The two looked to be teenagers themselves, both shirtless
and wearing baggy pants that had fallen to their feet.
Det.
Travis Mandell, the department's spokesman, said no information was
available on the robbers or the kid brave enough to break up their
heist.
