Allow me to interject here, and point out Allen West's weirdly German approach to capitalization. What's up with that? Proper nouns, sir. Capitalize proper nouns. Anyway:

The demagogic emotional rhetoric and lack of principled visionary leadership you may have observed is not what's best for our Nation...

I'm sure you can understand that I was greatly disturbed on Friday when someone mailed an envelope of a white powdered substance to one of our offices in Boca Raton. The substance tested negative, and our staffer is fine... however, derogatory marks and threats contained in the letter are not conducive to having a civil political discourse.

This incident, is just another in several incidents that have occured over the last couple of years and, have put me in quite a bad mood. Going back to last year, I have had to endure a Ft. Lauderdale political blogger publicly stating that he wanted to "skin me alive," a Florida Member of Congress organizing a protest outside of our office castigating me as a "misogynist,", that was the same person who is slated to become the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

My apologies for the wonky punctuation in that excerpt. West's editor seems to have taken the week off.

Now, look: Allen West is a human being with as much a right to his "bad moods" as anyone. What's troubling about the timbre of this particular note is West's seeming inability to distinguish between heated political speech and a threatening letter to his office. The latter is horrible, wrong, and evil, no matter what one's politics; our leaders and their staff must feel safe to perform their duties. The former is sacrosanct, and Allen West has engaged in plenty of it himself.

If Allen West now wants to praise "civil political discourse," awesome. Let's have some. But this is the dude who thinks people with "Coexist" bumper stickers are traitorous, who attempted to kick someone out of his town hall meeting for politely expressing his views during a Q&A, who thinks the left is "vile," and who has regularly insisted that those who disagree with his politics are "antithetical" to the American way of life. Which is to say: West can dish it out, but he seems loathe to take it.
