The Miami Dolphins just issued a statement to the media saying that Jeff Ireland will "assume full control over all aspects and decisions in regard to the Miami Dolphin football team and support staff."

Ireland, who had some trouble this offseason, was always slotted to take over for Parcells, according to the statement. And Parcells will "remain with the club on a daily consultant basis."

A representative from the Dolphins media relations office would not comment further, noting that

the statement speaks for itself. There will be no news conference to answer questions about the change.

The unexpected shift in power, combined with the brief, ambiguous message from the Dolphins, will certainly lead to speculation about the "real" reasons the Tuna is out.

Under the reign of Parcells, the Dolphins made the best single-season improvement in league history, going from 1-15 in 2007 to 11-5 in 2008, winning the division. The Dolphins are at 18-14 since Parcells joined the club.
