Perhaps the string of shootings at nightclubs, offices, and schools is sparking your imagination. What would you do if you were breezing through your regular routine or enjoying an evening out, and suddenly bullets started flying?
The Broward Sheriff's Office Weston district is providing some advice.
The office is inviting the public to a free Active Shooter Response presentation at 6:30 p.m. June 23 at Weston Regional Park.
In separate gun-related events, BSO announced Tuesday it is offering a no-questions-asked buyback of unwanted firearms June 25 in Pompano Beach and also launching family-friendly gun safety programs June 28.
The Active Shooter Response
The program was already in the works before the shooting at Pulse in Orlando, but the date was moved up because of that tragedy.
"It's fresh in everybody's mind," said Capt. Kevin Butler, chief of the Sheriff's Office Weston district. "There's a lot of anxiety."
He said the program addresses precautionary tips, such as figuring out where various exits are whenever you enter a building or public place. The program also focuses on navigating split-second decisions about when to run, when to hide, and when to try to overtake a shooter, depending on the circumstances.
"This is going to educate people to start thinking about their surroundings," Butler said.
If there's sufficient interest, more presentations may be offered, Butler said. The program was already presented to Weston city officials and staff.
"It was excellent," said Denise Barrett-Miller, director of communications for Weston. "It provides a lot of situational awareness [tips] that are good for every day of your life."
- The Active Shooter presentation is at Weston Community Center in Weston Regional Park, 20200 Saddle Club Road. RSVPs are recommended. Those who don't RSVP may attend if seats are available. - The gun buyback is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pompano Beach Substation, 1820 Hammondville Road, Pompano Beach. Guns are swapped for gift cards worth up to $200. Guns should be unloaded and secured in bag or container with the cylinder or action open.
- Gun safety classes begin June 28 at 11 BSO districts.
