CONGRATULATIONS!

Gold Coast Magazine has named you "The Best of South Florida!" After a year of trying to uncover the area's best gems, Gold Coast Magazine publicly reveals its prized list of people and places that define South Florida.

We hope you will join us on May 17th as we recognize you and unveil this highly anticipated annual Best of South Florida issue. You will receive your award at the event!

Enjoy cocktails, raffle prizes and the chance to mingle with South Florida’s finest at one of the summer’s swankiest cocktail soiree held at

Blue Martini, Galleria Mall, Fort Lauderdale.

Festivities begin at 6 pm and will last until 8 pm. Come see what the buzz is all about on May 17 and celebrate South Florida’s favorite things with Gold Coast Magazine.

Good to hear, nice honor. And I'm going, too, if nothing else for the free drinks. I love the taste of free drinks better even than drinks that I have to pay for. Even better when it's at one of the "summer's swankiest cocktail soirees." It doesn't say what I won for, but I'm going to hazard a guess that it's related to this blog. And I'm conflicted about that. Read the column, it's 80 proof. Read a cover story, it's usually 100 proof or better. And the blog? It's me at 8 proof, like light beer.

It's hit or miss on this thing, one reason being that it's impossible to think things through when you're rapping something out in 10 minutes. (For instance, that Best Of award might have nothing to do with the blog at all). I've found myself disagreeing with positions that I had taken a few weeks earlier. I've printed gossip, which is the farthest thing in the world I ever wanted to do when I got into this business.

The good thing is that you take it with a grain of salt, clicking here to see if there's anything vaguely interesting and then jumping off to other places when it doesn't amuse you. Hey, you get what you pay for. I don't take it very seriously, either. Never have. The main thing has been to have some fun and kick up some dust. Raise a little hell, point out things worth reading. Latch together a few rough facts, a little bit of Negro wisdom. You know how it is. I'm gonna keep on, too. Just don't get your hopes up.

BEFORE YOU GO...
