In June, New Jersey detectives asked Karen Sosa to give them an interview. They hoped the secretary could offer a clue about how more than a half million dollars disappeared from a Bloomfield car dealership between 2007 and 2008. When she didn't show, that was a clue. When she vanished from her home and her job, it began to appear that money had paid for her ticket out of town.

But for Jersey residents aiming to put off a prison sentence, Florida is the perfect place to escape and start a new life. But Sosa's vacation didn't last. This month, federal marshals tracked her to an apartment in Pembroke Pines, and now she faces 15 to 20 years on money-laundering and theft charges.
