The tragic events of September 11, 2011, happened 12 years ago this morning, but the memories and pain remain fresh in many Americans' minds.
Particularly, on the minds of Marriott Hotel chains, which chose to commemorate the memory of those fallen by giving away free coffee! And muffins! YAY!
But you had to be quick or you'd miss it. The complimentary muffins and coffee giveaway lasted only between 8:35 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.
Those happen to be the times the planes struck the north and south towers of the World Trade Center.
Classy!
But, hey, take solace, families of those lost on that day twelve years ago. Because people staying at the Marriott are getting free muffins in your loved one's memory.
MURICA!
Update: According to @eclectrica, the photo was taken at a San Diego Marriott.

The photo, taken by @eclectrica, was retweeted more than 3,000 times in the first two hours of it being tweeted.
Marriott Hotels soon released a statement, because of all the sorries:
"We are aware of the picture that was tweeted. It shows an offer that was made independently by the hotel and not the Marriott Hotels brand. As far as we know, it was limited to one property. While the hotel was making a sympathetic gesture to its guests in remembrance of 9/11, we apologize and understand why some people may have misunderstood the intent of the offer. We are reminding our hotels to use discretion and be sensitive when remembering major events such as 9/11."
It's been a banner day for tacky 9/11 advertising today.
The Los Angeles Lakers decided to commemorate the day by bizarrely tweeting out a picture of Kobe Bryant with the #NeverForget hashtag.
AT&T also got into hot water with customers over this ridiculous ad.
And HBO got in on the tacky fun too:

Ah, corporate America. There's never not a good time for product placement.
#NeverForget.
