Meagan Simmons, "Hot Convict," Suing Website Over Mug Shot Photo

Meagan Simmons' attractive mugshot made her a sort of internet sensation for a while. That is to say, people thought she was totally hot and decided to make her face a meme.

She didn't mind it so much. She even bragged about it.

But now that a background check website has decided to use her image for some of their promotional use, Simmons has decided to sue them.

She is, of course, looking for monetary compensation.

The 28-year-old Simmons, who hails from Zephyrhills, Florida and is a mother of four, was pulled over and booked on a DUI charge in 2010.

Hillsborough Police took her mugshot, and a hot convict star was born.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Simmons seemed to enjoy her newfound fame.

Last year, the mother of four from Zephyrhills tweeted "look who made the cut!" when her photo was part of an Inside Edition special about hot mugshots. She did interviews with the Huffington Post and the Daily Mail in April. There was even chatter she'd pose for Playboy if given the opportunity.

But now, she's suddenly not so super fired up about being famous on the internet.

Simmons is accusing the site, InstantCheckmate.com, of using her hot mugshot for their marketing purposes without compensating her, or asking for her permission.

The website is using her image, the lawsuit says, with a caption that reads, "Sometimes the cute ones aren't that innocent."

According to her lawyer, that super hot mug is intellectual property that must be paid for.

"At the end of the day, this is actually about intellectual property," attorney Matthew Crist said. "If someone is going to use your image they need to pay you for it."

In the time since her photo was blasted throughout the internet, Simmons has amassed a large social media following.

She has 2,447 followers on her Twitter, and 1,182 Instagram followers.

According to the suit, Simmons is alleging that all this exposure is invading her privacy, caused her mental anguish and disturbed her peace of mind.
