Richard Robinson's Night Included Robbing a Store and Shooting at Cops, Police Say

Here's how 27-year-old Richard Robinson allegedly spent his Wednesday night: Robbing a 7-Eleven store, shooting at police, and getting into an hours-long standoff with the BSO's SWAT team until surrendering at 4 a.m. today.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police Det. Travis Mandell, the cops got a call at 11:30 p.m. yesterday that a man had fired a gun at a 7-Eleven store in the 800 block of West McNab Road.

Mandell says witnesses told police the man had been firing a gun from his car into closed businesses and then parked at the 7-Eleven and went inside.

The man, who allegedly turned out to be Robinson, went inside the store with his gun and robbed the place, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, Mandell says.

While he made his getaway, police say Robinson noticed patrol cars from both the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Robinson stopped his car, reached out the window, and fired a single round at the cops, "narrowly missing" both of them before driving away again, Mandell says.

The cops followed him to the Windward Lakes Apartment Complex on the 4000 block of West McNab Road in Pompano Beach, where he parked his car and got out.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, as Robinson got out of his car, he had a gun in each hand -- one held to his head, the other at his side.

Robinson ignored the cops' demands to surrender and evaded police as he entered his apartment. Luckily for the cops, one of the sheriff's deputies on the scene recognized Robinson and his vehicle from an incident a few months ago, according to the BSO, and remembered which apartment he lived in.

The sheriff's office called in the SWAT team, at which point there was a standoff for several hours, and Robinson's neighbors had to be evacuated from their homes.

At 4 a.m., the standoff came to a "peaceful end," the sheriff's office says, and Robinson was turned over to the Fort Lauderdale cops.

No one was injured throughout the entire course of events, and Robinson was jailed on two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and one count of robbery with a firearm.
