Gala in Gables raises $700,000 for Bay Point Schools By Rosalind Rush Moore Not only did guests at the fundraiser for Bay Point Schools have a great time at this much-anticipated gala but they also helped to raise over $700,000 to benefit the school’s charity to provide educational and therapeutic services to at-risk teenage boys. The ninth annual event began at the Coral Gables Country Club with a cocktail reception followed by both silent and live auctions, a dinner choice of filet mignon or salmon and special performance by Jon Secada who sang a collection of songs from his new album.Hosted by Lea and Roy Black, the event attracted many celebrities including Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa and Ricky Martin who strolled the red carpet into the recently renovated club. A highlight of the evening was the bidding on fantastic auction items – a walk-on role in one of Director Brett Ratner’s films, a spot on TV’s Blind Date and a trip to Las Vegas aboard local resident Jim Ferraro’s plane. The highest bidding auction item was the brand new 2005 Ferrari F430 donated by The Collection which was finally purchased by Ayesha and Engin Yesil for $325,000.
The party didn’t end after dinner. Guests then boarded chauffeur-driven cars from The Collection to the Black’s nearby Gables home.
Adam Gaynor, guitarist of Matchbox 20 fame, entertained; wine, champagne and designer cocktails were offered and there was dancing into the early morning hours to music provided by DJ Mark Leventhal. Jim Ferraro was honored for his support as were Iris and Michael Smith, Deborah and Roland Scarpa Castro, Steven Posner, Kathryn Chesler, Cherie Hinson, Kristopher Hinson and Antonio Misuraca.
