It's going to look like something scary is going down at the airport or near Port Everglades today, with scores of police cars and fire trucks, but don't sweat it — authorities are carrying out a $100,000 emergency preparedness drill.
Today's scenario comes straight from an action movie: a terror attack — with hostages!! — that begins on a cruise ship and moves over to the airport.
Says the press release:
The first part of the exercise will take place in a cruise terminal and aboard a ship at Port Everglades, with armed terrorists, hostage and hazardous materials scenarios. The second part of the exercise will take place at the Airport in the afternoon and will involve an aircraft takeover. The exercise will involve personnel from the Broward Sheriff's Office, Port Everglades, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
According to the press release, Port Everglades applied for and received a $100,000 Port Security Grant through FEMA to carry out this multi-agency drill.
