Two Palm Beach sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man in Lantana this morning while serving him a warrant for violation of probation. The Palm Beach Post has identified the man this afternoon as Allen H. Hunter, 45. Hunter's brother told reporters that Hunter suffered from a bipolar disorder.

Sheriff Rick Bradshaw, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, told news media that the victim grabbed a police baton from the male deputy and began hitting him with it. A second, female deputy used a Taser on the man, but the Taser had no impact. The male deputy then fired and killed the man. The sheriff added that the victim had a history of "assault with violence on law enforcement."

Both deputies were being treated for wounds, and neither was identified. Bradshaw told reporters that PBSO would interview all the witnesses present and conduct a full investigation of the incident. Internal affairs investigators were already on the scene.

Emailed questions to PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera have not yet been answered. We'll update with further info as it becomes available.
