Fort Lauderale Police have released the raw footage shot outside of Cyn Nightclub that shows Miami Dolphins' defensive lineman Derrick Shelby's first run-in with police before getting arrested last Sunday morning.
According to a police report, Shelby was arrested when he refused to leave the club after being asked to several times by an officer.
Shelby is accused of touching women inappropriately without permission while hanging out at Cyn. He allegedly resisted police by blocking the entrance and exit of the nightclub and had to be tased several times before being detained. He was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and trespassing.
The raw footage, captured by security cameras outside of Cyn, located at 111 SW Second Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, captured the first encounter between Shelby and police while outside the club.
At about the 1:49 mark, Shelby and police are seen talking. The video shows Shelby being confronted by the officers in the right center of the screen. It's at this point, Fort Lauderdale Police say, that Shelby was being asked to walk away and leave the club.
The actual arrest and tasering were not captured on the video.
Following his arrest, Shelby's mug shot showed his face battered and bruised, which police claim happened during his resisting of arrest.
Two officers repeatedly asked Shelby to leave, but he refused. The officer who filed the report wrote that Shelby appeared intoxicated and slurred his words when he spoke.
After Shelby refused to comply, one of the officers told him he was under arrest for trespassing. As they moved in to cuff him, Shelby shoved away from the police and then took "an aggressive fighting stance," according to the report.
Officers also reportedly tased Shelby three times. The first two times he was tased had no effect on him, police say.
On Monday, the Miami Dolphins suspended Shelby indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Shelby's attorney says he is innocent and plans to plead not guilty.
Shelby, playing in his third season with the Dolphins, has played a backup roll as both defensive end and defensive tackle this year.
This is the second nightclub incident a Dolphins player has been involved in this season.
In July, center Mike Pouncey and his twin brother were accused of assaulting Miami man at a South Beach nightclub. Pouncey was never charged, though the victim threatened to sue.
